Now that Canon has announced theirs and there has been plenty of reviews of it, I’m wondering when we can see competing products from the likes of Sony and Nikon or third parties like Tamron or Sigma? I’m new to photography and haven’t yet grasped the cadence of releases like this. Do competing products come around pretty quickly or are all of them just blindsided by this and maybe more than a year off from having a viable product?
We already have the 28-200 and 35-150 from Tamron which offer more versatility…
Tamron has already the 35-150/2.0-2.8, which is even more impressive IMO.
The tamron 35-105 f2-2.8 is excellent but really heavy.
I don’t think companies are blindsided. Most have a roadmap of what they are working on and releasing in the future. A lot of manufactures have a great lens release every month it seems. Look at the Nikon Plena.
Tamron released the 35-150 f/2-2.8 years ago. Basically the same idea as the Canon but better (wider focal range, faster aperture, half the price).
Not sure where the innovation is, kinda reminds me of Apple congratulating themselves for releasing an iPhone with a USBC port
I’m very surprised Nikon don’t have lenses like it or the 28-70 f2. I remember when they launched the new mirror less cameras there was a big hoohaa about the mount being wider.
I remember them saying it would allow new designs for lenses because of that and how close to the sensor the back of the lens could be. We saw the nocht f0.95 or w/e it was but that seems to have been their only go at doing something unique.
As for Sony? Probably will see something in a few years to be fair. They’re quite good for just throwing everything at their cameras and lenses.
The other companies are going to wait and see how well it sells first. It’s impressive but it weighs more than the RF 70-200 f/2.8 and it costs $3k. I mentioned it to a colleague who has to shoot a lot of events and they felt if it was going to weigh that much they’d rather have 2 bodies one with a 24-70 and one with a 70-200 to give them more range. Everything in photography is trade offs. If it sells like gang busters they’ll know there is a market for $3000 lenses like that. If only a handful of people buy it because it’s either too heavy or too expensive, then it’s not worth going down that road.
genius move for Canon to create a lens system that’s unadaptable to sony’s E mount. the lenses are expensive as shit though damn.
Four years after the release of the RF 28-70 F2L, Canon is still the only company with a standard zoom with lower aperture than f2.8. I wouldn’t count on anyone else developing a 24-105 f2.8, or, if they do, it was probably already on their roadmap as a natural evolution of the 24-105 f4, which most brands have.
Sigma’s 24-35mm f/2 Art is the only other full frame lens with a constant aperture under f/2.8 that I can think of.
Not only is it a much shorter zoom range than the 28-70mm, but it appears that its been discontinued, so the 28-70mm is the only f/2 FF zoom on the market now.
I bought the tampon 35-150 f2-2.8 and I find I do not use any other lenses. It is amazing
I just ordered it, my hope is that it will replace my 28-75 and my 70-200.
I live for Tampon lenses.
I’d rather they go the other way and make a small but sharp 24-105 f/5.6
I just wish they could come up with a universal mounting system. I have to many e series to make a jump like that
