  • It’s a 50-50 for me here…

On one hand I saw one person post in a FB group that if you can’t afford a “Pro-level” mirrorless camera, don’t even bother getting in the hobby and made a blanket statement that all sub 1k USD DSLRs are just cheap toys. Meanwhile a lot of their photos were all over the place and bad. You could have the fanciest tool in the kit, but if you don’t know how to use it, even an old seasoned tool with an equally seasoned user will work circles around it.

And on the other hand something bugs me when people buy a huge camera kit, haven’t got the slightest clue how to use the camera or anything in the kit and either A. Got a gig as a photographer usually for a wedding B. Takes some rough photos and immediately asks what they could charge and then gets upset when you give some gentle CC and pointers. We were all beginners once and I wish I had someone to push me in the right direction but making those mistakes was a great teacher in itself.

Take the time to learn your camera and once you feel you’re proficient enough, take the leap but don’t brutalize some photos and then hop on FB or something and ask people how to save unsalvageable pics.

  • Entitled people. I like shooting cars, space and occasionally wildlife. I got suckered by friends into doing newborn shoots and weddings for exposure and while the shots were great and I was proud of it, it wasn’t shared nearly to the extent I thought they would have, if at all so I stopped that.

I did go to a car show recently and took photos of the classics I liked, edited the photos on my laptop right then and there and then printed on my mobile little 4×6 printer and people seemed pretty impressed and while it was intended to be free for promo in a sense, one guy shelled out 20 bucks and was adamant I take it just because he saw the process and got a physical print out of it just because I liked his car.
