I recently bought a film camera and I was wondering how computers screens and CRT TVs look like on film. Has anyone here ever tried ? If yes, does it look good or is it the total opposite ? If you got any photos to demonstrate that would be great !

CRTs work by scanning the image on the screen. Often when photos are taken of CRTs they are shorter than one “Frame” so you will get a band of picture with black before and after it. If you want a whole screen, you want to set your shutter speed for 1/30, since TV traditionally is a 30 Frame per second device.

I did a test for this exact thing a few weeks ago: CRT exposure test

    My set up was:

    • Commodore 64 CRT display
    • HDMI to RCA adapter to get still images on screen
    • 6x9 view camera with 135/5.6 lens
    • Portra 160, 8s @ f16.

Much more controlled than just taking a photo of an old TV that happens to be on, but might still be of interest.
