A lot of my favorite street photographers work, the photos in physical prints are only sold on Magnum. And the price feels ridiculously expensive, $10000-$20000 for a photo poster. And its not like I can get the actual digital file or negative to print myself. Is this simply the price I have to pay just for being able to hang the photo as decoration in my room?

and its not like original art or oil painting where there will only be 1 copy ever made. the photo can be printed for very low cost. so I’m basically paying $10000, just for the “idea” of taking a photo?

Searching for a “photo poster”, maybe the art market isn’t the right place for you.

And yes, limited and signed editions are “original art”. The interpretation of a negative in the darkroom or the editing of a digital file is part of the artistic process. So is the choice of paper, the format of the prints, the amount of copies in the edition, etc. The final product is the “original”.

Not sure at what prices you are looking at.
    Posters are $60 to $200.
Signed and limited prints are expensive (from $3000), but many of those are signed and limited editions. There’s one print form Alex Webb sold for $7000, but it is signed and 1 of 20.

I used to sell my limited edition signed panoramas for $499. 1ftx6ft, mounted.

The Las Vegas strip and Lighting where my biggest sellers.

I made much smaller sizes, unlimited print, for $29, rolled up in a tube. They were 4in x 3ft. (Not a one-to-one reduction) I made these myself and made a boat load of money from them in the early 2000’s.

For the right photo, well marketed, there is a lot of money to be made.

I remember going to the scholastic book fairs in elementary school. My mom sent me with $5000 so I could buy a few books and the $4950 Lamborghini poster that still hangs in my room to this day

I bought three small Magnum prints for around a hundred euros each. I look at them every day in my office and they are a joy.
